About Lakeside & Somers
Nestled along the shores of Flathead Lake, the communities of Lakeside and Somers offer breathtaking scenery, rich history, and a thriving local business scene. From their industrial roots to their modern-day role as recreation hubs, these towns embody the perfect blend of heritage and opportunity.
Somers was founded in the early 1900s as a booming lumber town, with the Somers Lumber Company supplying timber for the Great Northern Railway. It also served as a key steamboat hub, connecting early settlers and businesses across Flathead Lake. Though the mill has long since closed, Somers retains its historical charm, with remnants of its industrial past blending into its scenic lakeside setting.
Just south, Lakeside began as a small homestead, first settled by the Stoner family in the late 1800s. Originally named "Stoner," the town later rebranded to reflect its stunning lakefront location on Flathead Lake. While steamboats once carried passengers and goods through the area, Lakeside evolved into a recreation destination, home to Blacktail Mountain Ski Area, hiking trails, and year-round lake access.
Since 1973, the Lakeside Somers Chamber of Commerce has worked to support the businesses that make these communities flourish. What began as a small group has grown into a network of over 125 members, advocating for local entrepreneurs, fostering connections, and driving economic growth. The Chamber remains dedicated to preserving the area’s history while ensuring a bright future for businesses, residents, and visitors alike.
